Maximize your giving’s impact with NewsMatch
Now through Dec. 31 — the Institute of Nonprofit News’s NewsMatch will match your recurring monthly donation 12 times ($10 a month for a year = $240 for AfroLA) or double your one-time gift, up to $1,000. And, our first $3,000 in contributions is TRIPLED, y’all. AfroLA can earn up to $26,000 with matching funds.
A sustainable future for AfroLA is our ultimate goal. We’re actively applying for grants and seeking large-dollar donations to help fund our launch and initial operations. But, we’re also doing outreach to community members for smaller one-time and recurring donations that can also make a big impact. Our long-term sustainability is dependent upon philanthropic and grassroots support.
So, we’re passing the collection plate.
Givebutter can accept one-time payments via debit or credit card, PayPal, Venmo or Google Pay. AfroLA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization; all donations are tax-deductible.

To fund essential staff salaries and critical business operations, our immediate fundraising goal is $25,000. To reach this level, we need financial backing not only from philanthropic donors but also community members who believe in this work and are willing to pitch in to support it.
Give a one-time tax-deductible donation or become a sustaining member with a monthly/annual donation today.
Our hope is that at least 20% of that funding, or $5,000, will come from the people we’re working hard to serve in our community. A donation that’s as little as $10 can make a difference.
Your donations go directly to:
- Building and maintaining our website
- Our editorial operations, including fairly compensating the journalists, editors, freelancers, community contributors and staff that make our journalism happen
- Developing programs that empower current and future journalists to better cover L.A.’s Black communities through education, training and (paid) opportunities
This is just the start of what we have planned and we are excited to tell you more about the coming work your donations support in the near future. You can follow our coverage and be among the first to find out about our future programs by signing up for our newsletter.
